An Outstanding Set of 4 Tudor Oak Panels
Each panel, with a finely carved portrait head, set within a roundel, with stylised leaf decoration, to the bottom corners are mock oak leaves. Surmounting each face are Renaissance-type scrolls, drooping flowers, bells, etc.
The extraordinarily fine detail in the carving, especially in the gentleman’s face, with an exaggerated beard, is amongst the best example of this type of panel I have seen.
Probably part of an early cupboard from the middle of the 16th century.
English, possibly Flemish, circa 1520-40.
Height 13.5 inches, width 10 inches.
